ALLIANCE PERSPECTIVE

What a rate move means for a financing request

The benchmark is one part of a decision. Structure, coverage and timing also matter.

September 26, 2026

A change in Prime, SOFR or Treasury yields can affect a floating-rate facility or the market context for a new loan. The effect depends on the contract, spread, reset date and lender.

Borrowers should test debt service under more than one rate assumption, then compare amortization, fees, covenants and collateral requirements. A lower headline rate can still produce a structure that does not fit the business.

If a maturity or acquisition is approaching, waiting for a rate move carries a timing risk. Evaluate the whole financing need before deciding when to approach the market.
